Turn it 'off' and all OpenGL games will work again. Wanna know why? When it is 'on', it cuts short the string that describes all the extensions to OpenGL 1. Also, since this setting has been around for years, downgrading drivers won't change it, because it existed in earlier versions!
In summary: Turn and double check! Let us know how this works for you! As this may also explain ATi users having the same problem. It is set "off" by default in my system. Everything rocks: the smooth portals you can see thru, the gravity puzles, the wall walk, the spirit thing and the graphics engine.
I got thru the single play and tryed the Multyprey. Still no problem there. Uninstalled kipping settings and third party files. Uninstalled removing settings and third party files. Is the problem lays with the Multipray? I've had the demo on my desktop since the day it was released, and I was never able to play it. Prey 0. I didn't say it was on by default. I said I turned it on. Did you say if you have trouble running any other OpenGL applications? And urgh, learn to only quote what is relevant to your reply please! Thanks everybody for trying to help. The latest i tried was I am currently downloading a demo for Doom3. As soon as I try to run, I will report back with the result. I didn't make any changes and the game is still not working : The same for me.
By default is set to off, but i can't modify the extention limit even when i flag the box. Finally, I got it to work. Uninstalling it got both Doom3 demo and Prey to work.
So basically it was a driver issue. To everybody else, just make sure you remove any unnecessary drivers, and install only the needed ones. The game is awesome, btw. I just wanted to register my disappointment with the demo not working. I tried everything under the sun and still get lock ups, memory errors and failure to load errors.
This reminds me of computer games and demos of five or more years ago when you had to be somewhat of a computer expert to get them to run right.
I am running a freshing loaded copy of XP, 2 gigs of RAM, and a AMD processor with all the latest drivers and can't for the life of me play for more than two minutes. I was all set to buy this game, but playing the demo has steered me away. Sorry -the concept and graphics look great, but it has to run more than just a few minutes! All my other high end games run smoothly so you can't tell me it is my system. Finally i got it to work!!!
I've used the Xp utility to restore an older System Configuration at 09 April At this time i was able to play with Quake 4. It worked fine. The Nvidia graphic driver version at 09 April was I dont' know if it is a driver problem but from 09 April something wrong is happened with my OpenGl. Now i think that all the problems here are in some ways linked with PC problems not with the game itself.
Thanks very much! Nobody thinks it's their system until they figure out why it is. It doesn't matter how bad ass your system is - if an old driver or setting is choking it, all bets are off. Excellent info, by the way, about the Extension Limit setting. I don't think I speak alone when I say that I don't pay attention to most of those settings, or know what advantage they might have. It's uber-frustrating though, especially when you've been waiting for a long time. Half Life 2 took most of a day to install, because the Steam servers were choked and it wouldn't let you opt out of installing Counter Strike.
With a 5-CD install, it was time consuming to try different things to see if they worked. Newer drivers dont necessarily mean that they will make anything better!
Once you find the right ones for your card and system then bingo all good. DONT ever try to over install Nvidia drivers! You got to remove the current ones complete then reboot then reinstall the next ones you want to try.
