A well-known critic, observing the same performance — as a female character in a Shakespearean play — was so bowled over by Redmayne that he concluded he 'would bring out the bisexual in any man'. As for the wider press, they love him, too. One women's magazine recently described him as the 'Holy Grail' of boyfriends. Singled out for praise were his voice — 'warm and smooth like melted chocolate over a peach' — and his dusting of freckles.
And his popularity with his own sex was also recognised earlier this year when he was named best-dressed man by GQ magazine. Add a ready line in self-deprecation and that he recently married his teenage sweetheart and the only danger is that he could simply be too 'nice' for some people to stomach.
Which really leaves only one question to ask: where did it all go right, Mr Redmayne? The answer he would give, no doubt, is that he has been 'lucky' — and not just in the breaks he has had and the roles he has landed.
As he has himself admitted in the past, his life has been 'insanely privileged'. His father, Richard, is chairman of the leading financial house Cantor Fitzgerald Europe. In his time the year-old has also been a director of the morning television company TV-AM as well as helping raise finance for Eurotunnel.
Further back in the paternal line, there is Eddie's grandfather, John, an Army major turned stockbroker, and his great-grandfather Sir Richard Redmayne, who in became the first Chief Inspector of Mines. Eddie Redmayne top left stands next to Prince William in a fetching tiger stripe waistcoat as he poses with his friends at Eton. Redmayne bottom row, fourth from right admits he has been 'insanely privileged' and was even a member of Eton's Society 'POP' which included Prince William far right, top row.
As for the family wealth, that can be traced to the early 19th century and a successful linen and drapery business based in London's Bond Street.
Redmayne's mother Patricia comes from a somewhat more humble background. The daughter of a customs and excise officer, she was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed. While studying at Edinburgh University she met and married her first husband — a Swedish engineer. But the marriage did not last long and, after relocated to London, she met Richard Redmayne, also a divorcee. Eleven years his junior and strikingly good looking — the high-cheekbones and pouting mouth that would come to define her son are no one-off — the couple wed in Three sons would follow — James, Eddie, and Tom.
Eddie also has a half-brother and half-sister from his father's first marriage: Charles is the CEO of publishing giant HarperCollins, Eugenie an investment banker. Not only does it boast a pool and tennis court but has its own vineyard, too.
Holidays, half-terms and even weekends would be spent there as the children grew up. From this very traditional, moneyed background, Redmayne showed unexpected signs of talent. Redmayne would win a choral scholarship to Colet Court, a private school in London, then another to Eton College, which his father also attended. That musical was like a rite of passage. A boarder in The Timbralls, one of the two-dozen houses the school is divided into, fellow pupils remember him as being well-liked, hugely enthusiastic and highly organised in everything he did.
While sport was not his passion, he represented the school in rugby, playing alongside Prince William, a classmate. Redmayne describes him not as a close friend but as a 'mate' and says he sympathised with him —particularly when on the rugby field, where opponents were desperate to tackle the future King of England.
Other official photographs from his time at the school record his and William's election to The Eton Society, or 'Pop'. This group of or-so prefects can be distinguished from their fellow Etonians by the brightly-coloured waistcoats, made to their own design, that each is allowed to sport beneath their tailcoats.
The bookmakers are tipping him to come out on top of the same category at the Academy Awards for his mesmerising depiction of Professor Stephen Hawking pictured with Redmayne, the actor's co-star Felicity Jones and Jane Hawking.
But throughout the young Redmayne's time at Eton it was in drama that he would excel, appearing in a succession of annual school plays including Richard III and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
He was able and happy to be very raw. That remains part of the essence of why he's such an extraordinary actor. Redmayne has since returned the compliment, praising Dormandy for treating the boys like professionals. The school's approach to drama has more than paid off in recent years, as the success of old boys including Tom Hiddleston, Damian Lewis and Dominic West attests.
As his final year approached, Redmayne considered going to drama school but in the end did the sensible thing — accepting his parents' advice that it would be good to have a degree to fall back on. It was, remembers a fellow pupil, 'magnificent and outrageous — played as high camp with attendants dressed in leather'.
Next stop for Redmayne was Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied art history. He left with a — achieved despite the slight disadvantage of being colour blind.
During his three years there he also managed to fit in the Edinburgh Fringe, land a contract modelling for Burberry and do an internship at City broker Cazenove. He described the latter as 'the greatest acting job of my life — trying to pretend I knew what a share was'. This list will help you answer the question, Who has Eddie Redmayne dated?
